Applebee’s – A Wonderful Treat

M.I.A… that is what I have been the past year and 10 months…almost 2 years!! I am hoping to be back in the blogosphere and share stuff with you guys on a more regular basis. So, to start off this comeback, I’m going to share about our recent ‘Party of Five’ treat.

Last April 29, Pat of Applebee’s invited me and my lovees (that is my husband and kids) to check out their house specialties. I know that many have already eaten there and that there are also a number of reviews and comments about their food, so this blog post may not matter to some of you anymore, but as I’ve mentioned on my homepage, my posts aren’t really reviews. They are more of information for those who need it and are looking for it.

Applebee’s’ first branch here in the Philippines is located at W. Global Center, 9th Avenue corner 30th StreetΒ  in BGC at The Fort. Their restaurant has a laid-back, lets-hang-out-here-till-it-closes feel. The industrial lighting, brick walls, and pallet wood ceiling make it feel like home for me and my kids coz our house is somehow like that. Since the restaurant is along the street, you’ll see the cars driving by and the people strolling along. They have bar tables that are really great for when you want to unwind with your friends. I don’t know… I like bar tables! Maybe it’s just me… but even my son thought it would be nice to sit on those colorful bar stools — talking, laughing, bonding with friends or family — just relaxing, really.

Even though there are many reviews and comments about what they serve, like usual, I didn’t read them prior to me actually tasting the food and that is so I won’t be biased or anything. Since it was my family’s first time to try Applebee’s, we had no idea of what to order. When Nicole, one of the restaurant managers approached me, I said that maybe it would be best if she ‘ordered’ for us. I told her we wanted to make sure that we get to taste their to-die-for, you-can’t-miss-this dishes. And so she did! When the very friendly servers brought the food to us, they had to add another table to fit everything.

These were what Nicole had for us…

Wonton Taco (Bar Snacks – 195PHP / Appetizer – 225PHP) Spicy chicken-stuffed wonton shells, coleslaw, and cilantro.

A simpler version of the usual taco… I like it because it has no onions — sorry, onion-lovers, not so much a fan — and you don’t need dip or sauce for it coz the spicy chicken already gives you that flavorful satisfaction.

2016-04-29 16.21.12

Boneless Chicken Bites (Bar Snacks – 275PHP / Appetizer – 375PHP) Lightly breaded tender chunks of boneless chicken with your choice of honey BBQ, sweet & spicy, classic buffalo, or Korean BBQ sauce.

We had them with Korean BBQ sauce and my kids and I agree… these nuggets are good with some alcohol, but they are also excellent with regular soda. πŸ™‚

2016-04-29 16.20.26

Fiesta Chicken Chopped Salad (325PHP) Chopped lettuce tossed with black bean corn salsa, roasted red peppers and onions, tortilla strips, white cheddar, and spicy jalapeΓ±o dressing, mounded nicely with chimichurri glazed grilled chicken.

My kids and I love this! It’s one of our favorites. For some reason, it has that curry taste that we like. I know… I know… it has onions but I’d let it pass for this one coz everything in it is good, anyway.

2016-04-29 16.22.29

Sriracha Shrimp (Bar Snacks – 295PHP / Appetizer – 445) Crispy shrimp coated with rich and creamy Sriracha chili-lime dip.

My youngest, Rikki, likes shrimps but she didn’t enjoy this that much coz she’s not into chili food, but my two older kids thought it was delish! I got to taste it and for me, I’d prefer it with a tall glass of ice-cold soda or margarita.

2016-04-29 16.21.40

Pot Stickers (Bar Snacks – 225PHP / Appetizer – 325PHP) Shrimp and pork-filled wontons served with Thai peanut and soy dumpling sauces.

This would be on top of Nikki’s, my eldest, list. I think she was the one who finished all of it hehe πŸ˜› This dish is perfect with rice, if you’re a rice person, but just as great for munching and pica-pica.

2016-04-29 16.21.57

Fiesta Lime Chicken (395PHP) Grilled chicken done fiesta-style with zesty lime sauce, Mexi-ranch, and Jack-cheddar. Served with crisp tortilla strips, mexi-rice, and freshly-made pico de gallo.

I like Mexican and Italian food, so this would be on my top 3 . The overflowing cheese and the sticky rice with tomatoes and bell peppers just put a smile on my face — such comfort food for me. πŸ™‚

2016-04-29 16.23.37

4-Cheese Mac & Cheese with Honey Pepper Chicken Tenders (385PHP) Cavatappi pasta covered with rich 4-cheese cream sauce tossed with bacon and bell peppers. Topped with chicken tenders glazed with honey pepper sauce.

Mac and Cheese with a twist! Instead of just the plain noodles and cheese, this has crispy bacon bits and chicken you can actually bite. And that creamy sauce gives this dish a plus.

2016-04-29 16.25.56

Quesadilla Burger (525PHP) Juicy burger with Applebee’s signature Mexi-ranch sauce with pico de gallo and shredded lettuce served in a unique Jack and Cheddar quesadilla.

I love burritos, tacos, and all good food wrapped in a soft flour tortilla, so this also stays on top of my list. I could devour 2 orders of this all by myself! The burger patty, the sauce… everything in this is delicious for me. πŸ™‚ My son, Ice, can also eat an order all by himself, as this is his top 1.

2016-04-29 16.24.49

Pork Ribs (Half – 650PHP / Full – 950PHP) BBQ pork ribs marinated in Applebee’s special house blended, grilled to perfection, served with corn on the cob, french fries, and coleslaw with a choice of honey BBQ sauce, smoky chipotle, spicy sweet Asian chili, and Korean BBQ sauce.

We had the honey BBQ sauce. These ribs are a sure winner! They are very tender, you don’t need a knife to cut them. In fact, you can use your bare hands — well, fingers — to pinch a rib, nibble [even if you’ll get sauce on your face] and then lick the sauce off of your fingers. Don’t worry, they give wet tissues. πŸ™‚ I’d say this is a must-try when you visit Applebee’s.

Their dishes certainly didn’t disappoint us. They all aroused and stirred our taste buds.

For our drinks, we were somewhat classic. (From left to right) Strawberry Lime Margarita (150PHP), Cranberry Juice (145PHP), Mojito (95PHP), and Oreo Cookie Shake (295PHP). Rikki so enjoyed her shake, I believe it made her full before she could eat; although, she’s not really a heavy eater. She just triedΒ  a little of each dish and she was good. As for me… well, the margarita did the same — made me full before I could raid all the dishes that I like, but since I am the one writing this blog post, of course, I had to manage the spaces in my stomach, so I could fit the margarita and all the appealing food. πŸ˜›

2016-04-29 16.26.38

Mix Corona Extra premium Mexican cerveza with tequila margarita mix and you get this… Coronarita! (395PHP)

This double blast is good for sharing. It’s something new that Applebee’s has and we just had to try it. πŸ˜› I like the margarita but I’m not really big on beer, so it was my husband and my son who gulped the last part down.

Like all other resto-bars, Applebee’s has ‘happy hours’. For 89PHP, you can enjoy any of these drinks during that time: Tequila Sunrise, PiΓ±acolada, Classic Mojito, Lime Margarita, frozen Moonlight Margarita, Draft Beer, and other alcohol. Their Happy Hour is daily from 2PM to 5PM and 10PM till their closing time. Happy Hour indeed! πŸ˜›

Oh… and that Strawberry Lime Margarita that I ordered… I loved it! Honestly! I’m not fond of alcoholic beverages but this… didn’t even knock me down. πŸ˜› πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

We wanted to sample all their yummy-looking desserts, but we were rather shy. Really! I mean… dude! We already had a feast! Nicole ordered a lot that we were soooo full… our tummies were loaded and greatly satisfied. With that said, we just tried their best seller… the Butter Pecan Blondie (325PHP) — baked with nuts, topped with pecans and cream cheese sauce and served sizzling. This one is a knock out! Gooey, mouthwatering, delectable dessert… another comfort food for me, I want one all to myself. In fact, I want one now! HAHA πŸ˜› πŸ˜›

Their Churros S’mores (245PHP) — churro twists, toasted marshmallows, and chocolate dip — is a winner, too, if you ask me. My bebe-booms (those are my kids) and I like food so much that we check out and try food that looks appetizing… that’s why we decided to give this one a shot and guess what? It wasn’t bad… soft churros, marshmallows, which Rikki personally loves, and chocolate dip… you can’t go wrong!

For me, I’d say that their servings are just right for their prices. For example, the Fiesta Chicken Chopped Salad and the Fiesta Lime Chicken are good for sharing… 2 to 3 people can already enjoy. For 650PHP, 3 to 5 can have their fill of the pork ribs. Maybe the only dish that one may find a bit not enough for its price is the Sriracha Shrimp. Although the shrimps are big and savory, I think one would think twice before ordering this dish because their Bar Snacks order has 4 pieces only and their Appetizer, about 7 to 8 pieces. If it’s your first time to try it, though, you might want to overlook the price. Anyway, that crowd-pleaser is worth it. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

So, let’s recap… for me, my top 3 are the Fiesta Chicken Chopped Salad, the Fiesta Lime Chicken, and the Quesadilla Burger. πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

I want to thank Pat for inviting us and Nicole, Cybill, Liezl, and all the very accommodating servers for hosting us. πŸ™‚

Aaannnddd there you go… let’s call it a night! (We’re all ready to sleep) HAHA πŸ˜›
